Tokyo Taro – Al Falaj Hotel, Muscat

December 05, 2021

In the Sultanate, the appreciation for Japanese food and its distinct ingredients has grown over the years and restaurants serving these specialties have found their loyal clientele. But even in the years as early as 1985, true Japanese food aficionados flocked to one particular restaurant that they trusted would satiate their sushi and sashimi cravings – Tokyo Taro in Al Falaj Hotel, Muscat. Expanding its horizon to cover more than just the popular items, this upscale restaurant serves an array of Japanese culinary favorites like ‘Yakiniku’, ‘Gyouza’ and ‘Unagi Kabayaki’.

With interiors that are reminiscent of traditional Japanese eateries, Tokyo Taro promises an authentic Japanese fine-dine experience. Minimalistic yet refined, its plush wood paneling adds the element of grandeur while giving guests the privilege to enjoy a more intimate ambiance. To suit the preferences of different types of diners, the restaurant offers three different types of seating arrangements. Diners looking for a more personalized food experience can opt for a Teppanyaki-styled seating which takes them on a visual treat as they engage with the chefs and watch them stir up an array of exotic ingredients. On the other hand, those looking forward to a more intimate dining experience can choose a table seating. However, for larger groups who are desirous of truly immersing themselves in the experience, Tokyo Taro is the only restaurant locally that also offers the ‘Tetami’ styled seating.

When it comes to food, the options can feel limitless (for Japanese cuisine too, has a fine selection of dishes) but that’s where the enthusiastic hosts and even the chefs play a vital role. Sincerely passionate about everything that Japan has to offer when it comes to delivering a distinct dining experience that complements its original flavors, asking a beaming server for a recommendation is always a good idea. The best sellers turned out to be ‘usuzukuri’ or paper-thin slices of delicately cut fresh hammour served with homemade ponzu sauce and popularly paired with a bowl of well-seasoned edamame or vinegar- cucumber salad. While the main course options range from soba and grilled meat to ‘onigiri’ and tempuras, the ‘Yakitori’ or skewered chicken, as well as the chicken and beef teriyaki, are favorites amongst diners too. All served with a platter of freshly tossed vegetables, each dish is wholesome, fulfilling and scrumptious. For those with a sweet tooth, opt for the chef’s special fried ice-cream that comes as a generous serving on an orange base for a truly satisfying finish.

Theme Night to look out for: If the idea of unlimited sushi is something that appeals to those taste buds, Tokyo Taro hosts Sushi Nights every Sunday and Wednesday from 12 pm to 3 pm and 7 pm to 11 pm where it offers a fine selection of Nigiri and Makimono and Temaki.
